Learn Japanese from scratch in this very fast-paced Japanese Beginners Summer Intensive course.This Japanese evening course is designed for complete beginners who want to progress quickly or for those who wish to review their knowledge, as the material of three terms is covered in one term. Lessons take place twice a week and each session lasts for three hours. This course is an introduction to the Japanese language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication and the entire book “Japanese For Busy People” is covered in ten weeks. Students develop essential listening and speaking as well as reading and writing skills in Japanese. Students are introduced to Japanese characters (Hiragana, Katakana and very basic Kanji).This is a highly intensive course that requires commitment and dedication. Students should expect to study between three and six hours between classes to be able to keep up with the course pace. Whether learning Japanese for travelling, working abroad or with foreign companies, the Japanese Beginners course will enable students to communicate confidently on a basic level in everyday situations, socialise and not feel out of place when visiting the country.

By the end of the course students will have covered the syllabus normally covered in Term 1 and 2 of Japanese Beginners (Year 1). Grammatical structures

Sentences using 'to be'; various particles; word order; form of verbs according to positive & negative statement as well as in the future & past tense; interrogative nouns (nani,doko,itsu,dare); adjectives; type of verbs and verb conjugation; Te form + kudasai; modal verbs (Te form + mo iidesu ka); imperative (Nai form + de kudasai); present continuous (Te form + imasu); verb 'want' + infinitive (Watashi wa verb-tai desu).

Teaching and Assessment

The emphasis in this course is on listening and speaking. The lessons focus on language that is required in authentic situations. Classroom activities will include: role-playing, class room discussion, pair and group work, work on pronunciation and intonation as well as grammar in context. More comprehensive grammar exercises, practise in Japanese writing and reading texts are generally set as homework. All evaluation will take place in a relaxed and informal setting.
