Helps to provide an in-depth understanding of current theories about the English Language systems and how languages are taught and learned.
Suitable for: People from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds, including educators from the state and private sectors in both foreign language teaching, teaching English as a foreign language, language testers, curriculum developers, materials writers, and others involved in teaching and learning languages. The TESOL route is specifically for teachers of English as a second language.

Requisitos: First Degree in a related subject (Languages, Linguistics, Education, Psychology, Sociology or other related area); teaching experience in Linguistics/TESOL also taken into account. Degree classification 2.1 or equivalent from other countries. Language teaching experience recommended but not essential.

Course overview

The course focuses on aspects of curriculum and syllabus development, second language acquisition theories and classroom management, but also takes a sociolinguistic and sociocultural approach to looking at second language acquisition, learning and teaching.

Optional modules

  • a module from Intercultural Communication
  • Independent Learning Project - This module enables students to work independently on topics not provided within existing modules, subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor.


We use a wide range of assessments in order to enable students to illustrate both an understanding of theoretical issues and their practical application.


2 years, part-time. All teaching takes place in the evening, allowing students to pursue paid employment during the day.

Depending on semester:

  • Mon 6.00-8.00pm, or
  • Thurs 6.00-8.00pm

Career opportunities: Students graduating with the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL work in a wide variety of language learning and teaching-related professions. These include: teaching English or other languages to non-native speakers in both the UK and abroad; curriculum, test and materials development; and language policy. Others choose to stay in academia to study for a PhD in a cognate subject.
