Can we build robots that help prevent loneliness among elderly people? How can banks stop transaction fraud? How can we improve self-driving cars? How does Netflix know which movies to suggest we watch next?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has so many potential applications – in healthcare, banking, transport, entertainment and more. In this programme, you’ll learn not only about the technology behind AI, but also about its application in society.

Discover your Artificial Intelligence study programme
Artificial Intelligence is about the way that robots and computers interact with humans. And because of that, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s programme looks at real-world issues in society and applies technology to solve not just specific individual problems but whole classes of problems.

If you’re interested in using technology to help people and change your world through the latest machine intelligence, join us.

Temario

First year

In the first year, students from both tracks take the same courses – which makes it easy to switch tracks if you change your mind later. In the first semester, you’ll get an introduction to intelligent systems, and take foundational courses in programming, computational thinking and psychology. You’ll even build a computer program that plays a card game, contributing your first-hand research to an unsolved problem. The second semester is about interaction: how to build a computer program that understands how to interact and collaborate with humans.

Subjects
  • Computational Thinking
  • English Language Test
  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
  • Introduction to Psychology and its Methods
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Introduction to Programming (PYTHON)
  • Project Intelligent Systems
  • Dynamic Modelling for Human-Centered Systems
  • Logic and Sets
  • Academic Writing (BETA)
  • History of Science
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Information Management
Second year

In the second year, 40% of the courses are common to both tracks, including statistics, linear algebra and databases. But in the Socially Aware Computing track, you’ll also learn about cognitive psychology and AI’s applications in the context of health. For example, you’ll work with health science students on projects, bringing your AI knowledge to bear – you might be making hospital ward scheduling more efficient, for instance, or finding ways to help elderly people remember to take their pills.

Third year

In the third year, you can take a minor of your choice – either broadening or deepening your area of interest. Many students choose to go abroad to do their minor, studying things like computer science, data science, programming or other related disciplines at other universities. In the second semester, you’ll take core courses in machine learning, text mining and philosophy. In parallel with writing your Bachelor’s thesis, you’ll take an Ethics course – culminating in writing a short paper about the ethical impact of your research.
