If you have the ability but not the qualifications, an extended degree is the first step to graduation. This four-year programme is identical to the three-year degree, but includes a foundation year, and has a lower entry tariff.
Foundation yearThe foundation year is designed to give you:
A thorough introduction to chemistry. A thorough introduction to biochemistry and to biology. Fundamentals of drugs and diseases. Fundamentals of nutrition and health. Essential skills for science. Improved mathematics. Laboratory practice.. Degree structureThis programme focuses on the effect of food on physiology and metabolism. We are committed to promoting improved diet and health for all members of society. Students on this programme will learn to do this too by understanding and evaluating the socio-economic and behavioural determinants of nutrition-related issues such as obesity. You will study the science of nutrition along with other students in diverse fields such as biomedical, biological and sports science.
This programme will give you a multidisciplinary and scientific understanding of human nutrition and its relationship to health and disease. It will provide you with the necessary academic qualifications for further study in fields such as dietetics. It will also build your understanding and skills so you can improve the health and welfare of individuals, groups and populations in a safe and ethical manner.

Applicants who have significant work experience relevant to their preferred study path, but who do not have the minimum expected formal entry qualifications, are welcome to apply by citing their relevant work experience to demonstrate their potential capability. An appropriate portfolio of experience (with relevant details and evidence of training qualifications included) would normally be expected to be produced as part of the application process. The relevant programme leader or head of department may require an interview to be carried out if this is considered necessary.

A-levels/Extended Diploma/combination of A-level and Diploma/A-levels and Extended
Certificate
Subjects:

A-level: 64 Points from related subjects, for example biology, sports science, human biology, or physics
BTEC National: Extended Diploma in Applied Science
A-level and BTEC National: Diploma/Extended Certificate in Applied Science and 16 Points from a related science subject
Plus GCSEs in English language and mathematics at grade 4 or above (grade C or above under the A*-G system), and one GCSE science subject at Grade C or above under the A*-G system. We also accept equivalent qualifications at Level 2, such as Functional Skills in Mathematics and English.

We will also consider:

AS-levels along with A2-levels
Alternative qualifications at Level
3, such as OCR Cambridge Technicals, AQA Tech-level, the International
Baccalaureate and Access to Science
Applications
from mature students.
