LONDON CONTENT SUMMARY

  • Contemporary Fashion in London
  • Research Skills
  • Fashion Design, Draping and textile Manipulation
  • Developing 2D concepts into 3D prototypes
  • Defining your key style

Prior to starting your course in London you will be expected to undertake a body of research that will draw on your current practice and give you a starting point for further development throughout the course. Please see the materials list for details of the preparatory work.

This course focuses on contemporary fashion in London. A key element of the course will be utilising and developing your research skills. You will research contemporary British designers identifying their trademark characteristics. You will learn how to incorporate such elements into your own work to give you a distinctive style.

Research will also include a trip to key British stockists (Dover Street market, Browns, Liberty, Harvey Nichols) to enable you to capture the current British Fashion scene. You will also do research trips to the V&A, as well as East London studios, stores, galleries and nightlife. Research will be captured in your sketchbook, through drawings, photos, souvenirs, test samples, fabric swatches and notes; you will be feedback on your findings to the rest of the group during the week.

During the course you will start to turn your two dimensional concepts into 3D prototypes. During the process of creating your toiles you will cover draping techniques and textile manipulation.

During the course you will receive critical reviews from your tutor. Critiques support you during project development and provide informative feedback before the final submission of the project. You will receive feedback from your tutor in relation to your ongoing process. This will take the form of tutorials, critical review and a final group critic of your work.

By the end of the week you will have designed a collection of 8 looks inspired by the work you completed on your personal universe and seen through the eyes of contemporary British Fashion. The looks will be properly illustrated and accompanied by extensive research, colour palette and two drapes from the collection. You may also be able to supplement this with additional fabric research, prints and fabric manipulation.
