Temario

This will involve reviewing historically established methods/syllabi principles and re-analysing their appropriateness in view of recent knowledge about language teaching and in light of second language acquisition research evidence
The course will also consider radical recent alternatives such as “Dogme” and the “Post methods” hypothesis as a challenge to the notion of a single 'best' or 'right' method
This course therefore explores the bases of these developments, examines the procedures by which underlying concepts have been translated into practice, and analyses some of the emergent professional issues, all the while prompting students to contextualise this knowledge within their own pedagogic realities
DIRECTED TOWARDS: English teachers or people with a degree in a similar area of study, with a good level of English proficiency, and interest in teaching
OVERALL AIMS: In this course, students will develop knowledge and understanding of the philosophy underpinning the development of historical and recent language teaching methods and approaches
In addition, the student will also comprehend the content vs
process syllabus design in language teaching and the approaches associated with the post-methods era (Content and Language Integrated Learning, Dogme)
CONTENT: A historical review of language teaching methods and approaches; The communicative approach Key SLA theories and the interface with methodologies Content vs
process syllabus design in language teaching Learner-centredness and learning in language teaching Approaches to assessment the social context and appropriate methodology (focus on Chile) Recent developments related to the post-methods era including Content and Language Integrated Learning, Dogme & CALL
